Rotary Club of Fort Myers South presents 31st Annual All Star Classic

Sponsored by Acentria Insurance, the game features top local high school football players

The Rotary Club of Fort Myers South will present the 31st Annual All Star Classic (ASC), supported by title sponsor Acentria Insurance, from December 2 through December 4. This organized countywide game recognizes players and cheerleaders from Lee county high schools. Proceeds from the game will benefit the Rotary Club of Fort Myers South Foundation, Inc. that supports various local community programs and scholarships for those in need.

Tommy Bohanon, a fullback in the NFL who was drafted in the 2013 draft by the New York Jets, will be the keynote speaker for the ASC Banquet on Monday, December 2nd at Broadway Palm Dinner theater, from 6pm until 9:30pm. During this event, participating student athletes and cheerleaders will be recognized. The 31st annual All Star Classic game will be held on Wednesday, December 4 at Fort Myers High School.

“The All Star Classic has been a long-standing tradition that supports not only our students, but our community,” said Kerri Goldsmith, Rotary Club of Fort Myers South President. “This featured event allows the players and cheerleaders opportunities to collaborate with other students and come together as a team, while raising funds to support others in need in our community.”

The event was the first countywide high school football all-star game in Florida when it was founded in 1989. John Carrigan, a Sanibel resident, teacher and referee, wanted to provide a showcase for talented players who weren’t getting their due. Since then, it’s grown into a hotbed of top-level prospects, and nearly two dozen players who have taken part in the game have gone on to NFL careers.

The game features the best seniors, chosen by their head coaches, from Lee County public and private high schools. Cheerleaders from each school are also selected to participate. The contest pits a North team against a South team, and each player and cheerleader receive a customized commemorative ring or charm. The Rotary Club is seeking donations and sponsors to help cover the cost of the event. Businesses and individuals can sponsor the event, a team, player or cheerleader. Advertising opportunities in the event program are also available.
