Rotary South All Star Classic showcases college football prospects

Top high school seniors to play in 31st anniversary game

It’s one last chance to see some of Lee County’s most talented high school football players before they move on to college. The Rotary Club of Fort Myers South is presenting the 31st Annual All Star Classic (ASC), supported by title sponsor Acentria Insurance, from December 2 through December 4. This organized countywide game on December 4 welcomes 68 players from Lee county high schools, kicking off at 7 p.m.

The All-Stars aren’t just the players on the field. Each school is sending two cheerleaders as well, for a total of 38. Every All-Star participant gets a customized commemorative ring or charm.  Game tickets are just $5 and they are available at the gate. Parking is $5 per vehicle and includes a complimentary game program.

Tommy Bohanon, a fullback from the NFL who was drafted in the 2013 draft by the New York Jets, is the keynote speaker for the ASC Banquet on Monday, December 2nd at Broadway Palm Dinner theater, from 6pm until 9:30pm. During this event, participating student athletes and cheerleaders will be recognized.

The event was the first countywide high school football all-star game in Florida when it was founded in 1989. John Carrigan, a Sanibel resident, teacher and referee, wanted to provide a showcase for talented players who weren’t getting their due. Since then, it’s grown into a hotbed of top-level prospects, and nearly two dozen players who have taken part in the game have gone on to NFL careers including Sammy Watkins, Phillip Buchanon, Nate Allen, and Jevon Kearse.

The Rotary Club is seeking donations and sponsors to help cover the cost of the event. Businesses and individuals can sponsor the event, a team, player or cheerleader.
